Located in the vibrant heart of Deptford Market Yard, Freeweaver Studio is a contemporary weaving space inspired by London’s rich textile heritage and dynamic, fashion-forward spirit. Founded with the vision of making creative textile expression accessible to all, the studio invites individuals of all backgrounds to explore the art of mindful cloth-making—whether for home ware, garments, or  as artistic exploration.

We offer a range of hands-on workshops, from quick projects like Make a Cushion, Make a Scarf, or Make a Table Runner, to in-depth courses such as Introduction to Creative Weaving, delivered in blocks of 1, 4 or 8 sessions. For those with a specific vision, we also host personalised sessions, including the unique Weave Your Own Coat experience.

After completing a workshop, makers are welcome to book loom time by the hour, encouraging continued practice and exploration in a supportive environment.

At the core of Freeweaver Studio is a firm commitment to sustainability. We prioritise natural fibres, work with earth pigment dyes, and actively engage in community outreach to share knowledge, tools, and creative opportunity. Our aim is to nurture a slower, more meaningful relationship with textiles—one that respects both tradition and innovation.

With an ongoing residency program (launched in summer 2025), Freeweaver Studio is growing into a vibrant hub for textile arts, where creativity, craft, and community come together through the language of cloth.

About Erna Janine
Dutch-born textile artist Erna Janine began her weaving journey in 1994 with a two-year apprenticeship at a Rudolf Steiner-based studio in the Icelandic highlands. She later studied contemporary textile design and has spent the past 30 years independently teaching and practicing weaving.

Her work has been shaped by residencies in India and Japan, and exhibited internationally, including in the United States, the Netherlands, India, and the United Kingdom. As the founder of Freeweaver Studio in Deptford, Erna is committed to fostering creative expression through sustainable textile practice and community engagement.
